Frank Cooper dies at 99
Talent agent Frank Cooper, who discovered Frank Sinatra and Dinah Shore, put the first quizshow on radio and was a pioneer in TV packaging, died of natural causes on Jan. 19, four months short of his 100th birthday, in Encino, Calif. The Sept. 11, 1943, issue of Billboard declared that the 'forgotten man' in the "big Sinatra-Dorsey-MCA-GAC deal is Frank Cooper, who is merely the swooner's personal manager. Cooper is credited as being the first guy to see big money possibilities in Sinatra and swung his first theater dates which started the amazing success story." Cooper launched the Frank Cooper Associates Agency in 1945. He also represented sports icon Joe DiMaggio and procured gigs for heavyweight boxing champ Joe Louis; sold "Strike It Rich" to CBS, thus getting the first quizshow on the radio; became a leader in television development and packaging with the first dramatic series, "Man Against Crime," which starred Ralph Bellamy and began airing on CBS in 1949; worked closely with Ed Sullivan; was involved in the creation of "Dirty Harry"; with writer Dale Wasserman, put "Man of La Mancha" onto the Broadway stage; and represented writer-producer Beth Polson, author Leslie Waller, as well as Clifford Irving's books and films. Cooper was born in Harlem. At the age of 10, after losing his father, Cooper had to seek work to help his family. He knocked on doors in office buildings until he won a job as the messenger to Joseph Schenck, one of the founders of 20th Century Fox. Shortly thereafter, Cooper became the personal stenographer to William Paley. By 19 he was working as William Morris' secretary at the William Morris Agency; soon he was an agent himself. Eventually, to further his career, he moved to Los Angeles. Cooper was a substantial donor to organizations including the Cleveland Clinic, the U.S. Olympic Committee and the Jewish Federation. His contributions also helped render the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles a reality. Cooper is survived by his wife of nearly 75 years, Sylvia, a professional sculptor; two sons, Jeff and Martin; daughter Pamela, a theatrical talent manager and Broadway producer; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. New international trailer for 21 Jump Street
A new international trailer has gone online for upcoming cop comedy 21 Jump Street, featuring a couple of new snippets of footage alongside the some familiar exposition from earlier teasers.Granted, there's not a huge amount of new material on display here, but what there is is pretty funny. Watch out in particular for the scene in which a family friend looks set to blow Jonah Hill's cover at the local shoe store...You can take a look at the new trailer below... Although not all the gags hit the mark, we're still hopeful that this one could strike a solid balance between chucklesome comedy and thrilling action movie. It's a tricky balance to get right, so let's hope directorial double-act Phil Lord and Chris Miller have done their homework.21 Jump Street arrives in UK cinemas on 16 March 2012. Until then, you can amuse yourselves by practising barrel-rolling over the car bonnet. Trust us, it's great!

Exclusive: CSI: NY Plots Major Love Interest for Mac
Megan Dodds, Gary Sinise Mac Taylor's social calendar may soon be getting fuller on CSI: NY.The CBS drama has booked former Detroit 1-8-7 star Megan Dodds to appear in multiple episodes as a new love interest for Gary Sinise's Mac, executive producer Zach Reiter tells TVGuide.com. The casting comes in the same season that finally introduced Mac's wife, Claire (Jaime Ray Newman), who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks.Get more scoop on your favorite shows in our Winter TV preview"Leading up to the end of the season - which may or may not be the end of the show - we explore Mac's romantic life a bit," Reiter says. "We basically set that up in the premiere, having that moment where Mac releases the opera tickets into the ocean and symbolically says goodbye to Claire and that chapter of his life. We were hoping that he would be able to move on romantically. It would be a shame if a guy like him could not find love in his life."Dodds will play Christine, a woman from Mac's past. "When Mac first moved to NY and decided to join the police department, Mac was in the police academy with Christine's brother," Reiter says. "So there's a familiarity and an association from way back when. ... But this is a woman all these years later who reaches out to reconnect, more or less to say, 'I read about what you did for the [Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance] and the survivors of 9/11. It snowballs from there."Exclusive: CSI: NY books Lee Majors for guest spotReiter says Dodds' character will appear in five episodes. "We'll see the courtship," he says. "If one exists. There are aspects of that relationship that become a little bit complicated, but what we're hoping is to see whether Mac can successfully move on from Claire. It's fun to see him awkwardly go through that."Dodds, 41, co-starred as one of Drew Barrymore's evil stepsisters in Ever After: A Cinderella Story. She also appeared on such TV shows as House, Lie to Me, and the BBC's MI-5.CSI: NY airs Fridays at 9/8c on CBS. Dodds will first appear in this season's 12th episode, which has not yet been scheduled.
ITV, BSkyB told to back U.K. films
LONDON -- Blighty's broadcasters -- specifically satcaster BSkyB and commercial broadcaster ITV -- were called to invest more coin in Brit pics while indie producers should be able to recoup more money if their pic clicks, said the U.K.'s long -awaited Film Policy Review. Former culture secretary Chris Smith, who chaired the independent review, joined current culture minister Ed Vaizey at the Department for Media, Culture and Sport in London on Monday when he unveiled the 108-page report, which contained 56 recommendations on national film policy for the U.K. government to review. Smith, who noted that the long-gestating report comes off of the back of "an exceptionally good year" for independent British film, singled out some of the most significant recommendations in the review, including pointing the finger at ITV and BSkyB, which, he said, "should be doing more both in terms of investing in independent British film production and in their acquisition policies for movies that they buy to show on their channels." In light of the fact that lottery funding for film will increase from the present 27 million ($41.4 million) to $61.3 million by 2014, the review also called for better terms for independent producers in Blighty. Specifically, it recommended that producers must be able to recoup more money to reinvest in future productions and recommended that the U.K. tax credit should be recognized as the producer's equity stake, and should recoup on equal terms with any BFI investment. "We believe there should be a mechanism in the funding system, especially with more lottery money becoming available in the lottery system, for producers to be able to reinvest money from successful movies into further production rather than simply returning it to the lottery pot," said Smith. "Success should be rewarded and re-investment should be encouraged." Additionally, as previously reported in Variety (Daily Variety, Jan. 11, 2012), the review proposed a new joint-venture fund to align producers more closely with U.K. distributors. The proposed fund would allow producers to access lottery funding to share the cost with distribs of pre-buying U.K. rights to their own projects. Not only would this mitigate the risk of the distributor, but it would encourage the producer to have a more direct interest in a film's success at the box office, given he or she would also be a co-owner of U.K. rights. A raft of other recommendations filled the report, including calling for unified film education across the country, an annual British Film Week to put Brit pics "more actively in front of British audiences," making it a criminal offence to record a movie in a cinema, and encouraging more shared rewards between producers, writers and directors, so the creative team can share in the success of a pic. However, given that it's been 14 years since a review of film policy has been offered up to the government, there were some blazing omissions. The report failed to address the notorious low-film rentals that independent distributors receive (around 28%), and suggested nothing about encouraging European co-productions, or putting the U.K. back into the Eurimages co-production fund. Smith remarked that the BFI will be told that the U.K. "should" look toward European co-productions, but given that it charges an upfront fee, re-entering Eurimages "was not the highest or most immediate priority." And while exhibs perhaps weren't being asked to step up on the rental front, they were however being called on to help find a more economical solution to the Virtual Print Fee model "that puts the independent distributor in an economic position which is as good as or better than the 35mm model." They were also encouraged to discuss with indie distribs "changes to current practices and agreements regarding theatrical windows and other exhibition terms." Members of the Film Policy Review panel who helped compose the report included "Gosford Park" and "Downton Abbey" scribe Julian Fellowes, Film4 topper Tessa Ross, Matthew Justice, producer and m.d. of Big Talk, and Will Clarke, founder and former CEO of Optimum Releasing. The U.K. government and the BFI are expected to respond in full to the recommendations in a few months. Contact Diana Lodderhose at diana.lodderhose@variety.com
