Golden Globe nominees for best director
Martin Scorsese on the set of 'Hugo' The HFPA seemed to go out of its way to spread the love in the director category this year, nominating two legends, a respected auteur, a French filmmaker currently riding the crest of the award-season wave and George Clooney.Wait: Clooney got nominated over Steven Spielberg and Stephen Daldry? By George, do you think celebrity has anything to do with the choices?Clooney's inclusion for his lead actor work in "The Descendants" had been considered a given. However, the "Ides of March" nods for motion picture drama and director caught some by surprise since the film hasn't had much traction with critics groups or other awards precursors. But there is history on the HFPA side, as the org's voters had previously nominated Clooney for his behind-the-camera work on his last film, 2005's "Good Night, and Good Luck."As one HFPA member put it: "Cynics might think otherwise, but it's pretty simple. Voters like Clooney and believe his movie delivered."Clooney is joined in the category by Alexander Payne, who directed him in "The Descendants." Payne, too, has a proven track record with the Globes, having been nominated twice for directing and winning twice for screenplay. Another favorite is "Hugo" helmer Martin Scorsese, whom the HFPA honored at last year's ceremony with its Cecil B. DeMille award. Scorsese has taken the category twice in the past decade for "Gangs of NY" and "The Departed."The category's final two slots come from well-regarded comedies with French connections -- Gallic filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius' valentine to silent cinema, "The Artist," and Woody Allen's nostalgic "Midnight in Paris." The nod reps Allen's fifth nomination as a director, though he has never won the category.Notably absent is Spielberg, a 10-time nominee and two-time winner as director. Spielberg's equine epic "War Horse" found success in motion picture drama, but couldn't pull off a daily-double for its director. (Spielberg is present among the animation nominees for "Tintin.")Daldry's omission is also something of a surprise, since the British helmer had received nods for his previous two outings, "The Hours" and "The Reader." Less of a shocker: Auteur Terrence Malick failing to make the cut for his impressionistic "The Tree of Life." HFPA hasn't nominated Malick since "Days of Heaven" in 1979.And though their films showed up in the heavyweight drama category, the HFPA ignored Bennett Miller ("Moneyball") and Tate Taylor ("The Help"). Taylor, helming his first studio film, has been receiving more run for his screenplay adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's popular novel. Miller's "Moneyball" has also been winning more kudos on the writing side for its degree-of-difficulty adaptation of Michael Lewis' 2003 numbers-oriented bestseller.Since the directing category typically draws more from the drama side than its comedic counterparts, neglecting to include Paul Feig ("Bridesmaids"), Jonathan Levine ("50/50") or Simon Curtis ("My Week With Marilyn") didn't raise any eyebrows among Globe watchers. As for the absence of last year's winner, David Fincher, who returns this year with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," one HFPA member offers a concise explanation: "We just liked the Swedish version better."GOLDEN GLOBES COUNTDOWN Year of couples therapyThe ContendersDrama: Best Picture | Comedy: Best Picture | Best Director | Drama Actor/Actress | Comedy Actor/Actress Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Pair underperform at box office
'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows'Family follow-ups Warner Bros.' "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" and Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" weren't enough to cure the domestic B.O.'s malaise, as overall totals came in roughly 10%-15% behind the same frame last year. Paramount's "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol," which helped fuel Stateside biz with its limited week-early Imax launch, boosted overseas box office with a projected $68.2 million."Sherlock Holmes" easily won the weekend with an estimated $40 million domestically, while "Alvin" came in at No. 2, grossing a modest projected $23.5 million through Sunday.Neither film managed to match opening totals of their predecessor pics, though the first "Sherlock" pic and Fox's "Alvin" sequel both launched over Christmas weekend in 2009. The inaugural "Alvin," however, bowed at $44 million during this same weekend in 2007 -- a much livelier marketplace.Appealing to the same crowd as "Sherlock," Par's exclusive large-format bow of "Ghost Protocol" saw terrific results, totaling an estimated $13 million -- the majority of which (nearly $11 million) came from Imax -- at a total 425 locations. Pic's cume is $13.6 million, including additional revenues from late-night Thursday screenings.Par vice chairman Rob Moore said the early Imax-dominated launch was meant to encourage word-of-mouth among fanboys, who tend to be first-responders."No matter what's going on, if you're someone who likes to see movies in Imax, you also like to see them first," Moore said."Ghost Protocol," which expands nationwide Dec. 21, posted a $32,000 per-screen average. That's a stellar start for the film, even with the average premium ticket upcharge from large-format theaters ranging between $3.50 and $5.B.O. continued to look more lively at the specialty end of the biz.Focus Features' "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" was the clear indie winner on an individual theater basis, edging out "Sherlock" and "Ghost Protocol" in a few of its total 16 engagements. "Tinker," which launched solidly last weekend, scored a soph-sesh per-screen average of $28,267 for an estimated weekend gross of $452,278. Pic's cume is slightly more than $850,000.Five-times Golden Globes nominee "The Descendants" also displayed sturdy legs, grossing an estimated $3.4 million from 878 playdates. "Descendants," from Fox Searchlight, dropped a scant 24% in its fifth week, with a Stateside cume of $28.7 million.Underperforming in limited release, Sony Pictures Classics' "Carnage" tallied an average of just $17,139 from five locations -- a less-than-desirable start, especially during a competitive holiday time frame.Par, meanwhile, had OK success with Jason Reitman's black comedy "Young Adult," which expanded wide to 986 locations for an estimated weekend take of $3.7 million. Pic launched limited last weekend and has cumed so far $4.1 million. The studio plans to give the pic another push on Jan. 13.'Game' on at B.O.?Warner Bros. launched "Game of Shadows" a week before Christmas to give the pic a headstart going into the holiday frame. And while the sequel fell significantly short of its predecessor (that pic opened with $62 million), the studio is hopeful that "Game" can match -- if not surpass -- the original by Christmastime."We opened this weekend knowing that most kids were still in school on Friday and women are preoccupied with shopping," said Warner domestic distribution prexy Dan Fellman. "I remain confident that 'Sherlock' will wind up this year's biggest Christmas movie."Fellman said he's encouraged by positive exit polls; the film received an overall A- CinemaScore rating vs. the first pic's B rating. Both genders gave the sequel a high appraisal, with men accounting for 59% of the opening. Under-25 auds, however, only repped 31% of the pic's debut take; auds under 18 (at 14%) bestowed the film with an A.Warners spent a reported $125 million on "Game," not including P&A costs. And while the film's domestic prospects are uncertain (an uncommonly dense six wide releases bow next weekend), overseas box office certainly will help the studio recoup its investment. "Game" launched in six markets for an estimated $14.65 million."Game" -- the season's first all-audience tentpole -- likely was hurt by Par's early entry "Mission: Impossible," since both films targeted similar demographics. It's unclear how much of an impact this weekend will have on "Mission" when the film expands to more than 3,000 locations on Wednesday. But Par's Moore insisted that was never really an issue: "The question always has been, 'How do we gross the most money in total?'"For Imax, the jury is still out on whether the unprecedented move will incite other studios to follow suit. One encouraging note, according to Imax prexy Greg Foster, was the film's 31% Friday-to-Saturday jump, excluding approximately $500,000 in midnight grosses. (Pic's total midnight and late-night Thursday tally, the latter of which wasn't included in the three-day gross, yielded $1.1 million.)"We've noticed over the last six months that more of the same doesn't appear to be working, which is why being so closely related to this innovative launch is so exciting for us," Foster said. "But you've got to have the goods."Tepid hybrid tally"Chipwrecked," the $75 million-budgeted third installment in Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks" toon-live action franchise is the newest family film to enter the market, but the film was hurt by competition from theaters packed with family holdovers, including top 10 players "Hugo," "Arthur Christmas" and "The Muppets."Par's "The Adventures of Tintin" and Disney-DreamWorks' "War Horse" will further crowd plexes when they bow Dec. 21 and Christmas Day, respectively. But Fox distribution exec Chris Aronson added that "Alvin" is the only G-rated movie appealing to young kids. With most kids on winter vacation, mid-week totals should improve, though everyone is bracing for a soft weekend, as Christmas Eve (historically a B.O. trough) falls on Saturday. 'Boots' tops o'seas B.O.
Paramount-DreamWorks Animation's "Puss in Boots" clawed its way to the top of the Dec. 9-11 overseas frame, with an animated $47.1 million weekend gross, slicing up previous four-week champ, "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1," which posted $19.3 million (for a cume of $381.1 million)."Puss," which had an aggressive 17-territory expansion, has grossed $143.7 million from a total 40 international markets so far.Par chose to roll out "Puss" slowly, having first launched the film day-and-date with the U.S. in Russia the weekend of Oct. 28, followed by only a few additional major markets, including Spain, France and Mexico. Among the toon's biggest contributors last weekend, Germany posted $7.2 million on 680 screens -- approximately 6% ahead of the local bow of 2011's highest-grossing toon, "Kung Fu Panda 2."In Brazil, "Puss" grossed $5.9 million, with Australia and the U.K. also contributing solid debut perfs of $4 million and $3.1 million, respectively. The upcoming holiday period can mean B.O. gold both domestically and abroad, especially for family-skewing films with kids on vacation. What's more, there's little else internationally to compete for family auds. Fox is staggering its overseas release of "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," while "The Adventures of Tintin" will have been in play for nearly two months by the Christmas break. However, Sony's "Arthur Christmas" continues to vie for holiday moviegoers.Last weekend, that film landed in third place overall, with $15.1 million from 63 markets. "Arthur Christmas" has collected $58.6 million internationally, but has only a few major markets yet to go, with Italy opening the pic Dec. 23. Contact Andrew Stewart at andrew.stewart@variety.com

Were You Wondering if Rob Lowe is Hilarious as Lifetime's Convicted Killer Drew Peterson? Because He Is.
Lifetime movies are better than movie movies. They’re melodramatic, inbred morsels of filmic stank. And the best ones — as of today — possess a sacred ingredient called “Rob Lowe’s Moustache-y Acting Talents.” As Bolingbrook, IL cop-turned-murder suspect Drew Peterson in the new TV feature Drew Peterson: Untouchable, Lowe tries on his best Da Bears accent and dons a moustache that reminds me fondly of Reno 911 and his Parks and Recreation costar Nick Offerman. You will not be able to handle his sole line of dialogue in the new teaser trailer. OK. Just OK now. If Drew Peterson ever really uttered the line, “I’m untouchable, bitch,” I’m assuming he didn’t deliver it with effeminate, monotone dispassion. Then again, maybe that fey, stilted quality is what made Drew a serial killer. All I know is this obviously Lifetime’s finest work since the Hayden Panettiere/Marcia Gay Harden triumph Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy, where Harden all but fed her Oscar to wolves. And now, here is a triple-play of amazing Drew Peterson: Untouchable screenshots. Untouchable indeed, bitch. Rob Lowe Channels Drew Peterson In Creepy Teaser for Lifetime Movie [THR]

Expecting
A Banco Estado presentation of an Ondamax Films, Mirera Escondida, Lastarria 90 and Zona Cinema production. Executive producers, Gaston Chedufau, Jose Andres Calderon. Co-producers, Felipe Braun, Juan Carlos Salfate. Directed, written by Francisca Fuenzalida. With: Maria de los Angeles Garcia, Diego Ruiz, Claudia Hidalga, Maite Neira.A strong male lead and a keen sense for making the most out of a single location help make "Expecting" worth more than cursory a view. But despite its strengths, this scrappy teen abortion saga from Chilean writer-director Francisca Fuenzalida has too many hallmarks of a hesitant first feature, and the filmmaker's inability to tamp down her characters' too-abrupt emotional shifts turns what should be a slow-burner into an often overheated melodrama. Appeal seems mostly limited to fests and other low-key indie sanctuaries. Pic starts strong with its only outdoor scene, as girlish protag Natalia (Maria de los Angeles Garcia) buys a cache of pills from a pernicious nurse (Claudia Hidalga) in a park. Abortion is still illegal in Chile, and Natalia plans to use a parentless night at home to furtively end her first-trimester pregnancy. Boyfriend Diego (Diego Ruiz) turns up to offer emotional support, and the two spend the rest of the night in the house, debating whether or not to go through with the procedure, playing out their class differences and questioning their future together, until a medical emergency throws everything into chaos. "Expecting" is strongest when it emphasizes the quiet moments of creepingly indefinite terror while the two wait for the pills to work. The naive young lovers aren't entirely clear about what they're getting into, so any minor discomforts or delays in the pills' effect can serve as tripwires of extreme anxiety -- a tense time-killing card-game scene is quite well played, in that regard. Yet as deftly as the film navigates these internalized sequences, the louder conflicts are more clumsily orchestrated, with an excess of storming out of rooms, an ill-advised almost-sex scene and an overly spiky vacillation between tenderness and hostility that makes the central couple a bit hard to believe. Garcia holds the camera well, but often gives too telenovela-ish a contour to her character's rather rigid emotional arc. Ruiz is a minor revelation, however, effectively conveying a stewing sense of panic and helplessness submerged just below his teenaged approximation of stiff-upper-lip masculinity. On a technical level, the film does well to work within its limited budget and location, avoiding claustrophobia or a sense of visual sameness despite taking place almost entirely inside a single dwelling.Camera (color), Pablo Letelier; editor, Rodrigo Saquel; music, Sebastian Jarpa; production designer, Pamela Chamorro; costume designer, Pamela Paredes; sound, Jarpa; associate producer, Alvaro Corvera; casting, Pilar Zderich, Jimena Rivano. Taylor Swift Wins Big At AMAs
First Published: November 21, 2011 12:43 AM EST Credit: Getty Images Caption Taylor Swift accepts the award for Favorite Country Female Artist onstage at the 2011 American Music Awards held at Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE on November 20, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Taylor Swift was crowned artist of the year at the American Music Awards for a second time. This is so crazy! the country superstar said after beat such contenders as Adele, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry to capture all three awards that she was nominated for at Sundays ceremony, including artist of the year, the shows highest accolade that she previously claimed in 2009. I ended up writing the record by myself, so the fact that you would honor it this way, you have no idea what this means to me, said Swift after winning the trophy for favorite country album for Speak Now. She was also awarded the prize for favorite country female artist. Nicki Minaj, the pink-loving hip-hop diva, won two awards Sunday. She kicked off the 39th annual fan-favorite ceremony by sporting a pair of speakers on her much-talked about posterior and was later honored as favorite rap/hip-hop artist, besting a group that included mentor Lil Wayne, and won favorite rap/hip-hop album for Pink Friday. Theres so much love in this room, beamed the pink-haired Minaj. Adele had been the nights leading nominee with four nods, but didnt have much of a presence at the show: She was absent from the ceremony because she is recovering from recent throat surgery. Adele tied Swift with three awards: favorite pop/rock female artist, adult contemporary artist and pop/rock album for 21. Other winners included Maroon 5 as favorite pop-rock band/duo/group, Blake Shelton as favorite country male artist, Lady Antebellum as favorite country band/duo/group, Beyonce as favorite soul/R&B female artist, Rihanna for favorite soul/R&B album for Loud and Hot Chelle Rae as new artist of the year. The ceremony inside the Nokia Theatre in an unusually rainy Los Angeles was drenched with 17 musical performances. Justin Bieber got in the holiday spirit among a forest of neon lights with Under the Mistletoe, and Kelly Clarkson, wearing a glittery red gown with her hair swept to the side, delivered a swinging rendition of her hit Mr. Know It All as back-up dancers dressed as 1930s-era photographers snapped the first-ever American Idol champion. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony shared custody of rapper Pitbull, who joined the former couple in a pair of separate performances. Lopez performed essentially a live version of a car commercial starring the Idol judge set to Papi with the car onstage before launching into her hit On the Floor. Pitbull later returned to the stage and joined Anthony for Rain Over Me. Lopez expressed surprise when she won the favorite Latin music artist award. Its been up and down and just exciting and overwhelming and so many things, Lopez said of the last year. Several artists delivered stripped-down performances: The Band Perry crooned an emotional If I Die Young, a pink-haired Perry accompanied herself on guitar for The One That Got Away and a platinum-blonde Chris Brown simply sang All Back before being joined by a troop of helmet-clad back-up dancers for a flashy interpretation of Say It With Me. There were collaborations, too. Lopez joined a glowing-in-the-dark will.i.am for his new single Hard. Christina Aguilera dueted with Maroon 5 on their Moves Like Jagger, and then Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine teamed with Gym Class Heroes for their hit Stereo Hearts. Bieber joined LMFAO in animal-print pants for the shows finale, which ended with everyone on stage including David Hasselhoff stripping down to smiley-face underwear. Heavy D, Dead At 44: A Big Screen Tribute
Hip hop artist Heavy D died today (November 8th) at the far too young age of 44. The "Now That We Found Love" singer was best known for his work in the R&B scene, but the Jamaican-born Heavy D was a known quantity on the screen as well. Indeed, his work as an actor can be seen as recently as "Tower Heist," the Brett Ratner-directed and Eddie Murphy-starring comedy currently playing in theaters. In honor of Heavy D, take a look back at some of the artist's most memorable turns on the big screen. "Life" It's only fitting that one of Heavy D's earliest screen appearances has a strong link to his final bow: he starred in the 1999 comedy "Life" opposite future "Tower Heist" co-star Eddie Murphy. The movie was also produced by "Heist" producer Brian Grazer. D starred in "Life" alongside a who's who of comedians, including Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Anthony Anderson and Bernie Mac. "The Cider House Rules" Heavy's personality and presence lent itself easily to comedy, but he was no stranger to award-winning fare either: he played Peaches in "The Cider House Rules," the 1999 Oscar contender about a young man's connection to an orphanage during World War II. "Boston Public" Heavy D had an acting presence on the small screen as well as the big one. He had a recurring role on Fox's high school drama "Boston Public" as Bob "Big Boy" Lick, the school's compassionate guidance counselor. D appeared in 13 episodes of the TV series from 2000 through 2003. "Hitch" OK, OK, so Mr. D wasn't actually in this comedy, but "Now That We Found Love," provided the musical tapestry upon which Will Smith and Kevin James boogied in the final wedding scene. Try as we might, we can't hate "Hitch." And we will always dig early '90s rap. "Tower Heist" His final appearance was brief, but memorable: Heavy D had a cameo appearance in this past weekend's "Tower Heist" as a courthouse guard. Nothing too fancy, but he was surrounded by fantastic actors and previous collaborators in his final cinematic effort. Leave your thoughts for Heavy D in the comments section and on Twitter!

Natalie's Small Rant: Dear The Truly Amazing Wife: Everyone knows that Alicia shouldn't be around Peter, but that doesn't always imply Will may be the finest selection for her either. Read Then-24-Year-Old Brett Ratner's Fairly Astute Overview of 'The Paper'
Brett Ratner is the fact that rare Hollywood director who takes major flak from both Internet commenters and highfalutin film journalists. "I am flattered, contrary," the 'Tower Heist' director told Dork Itzkoff within the NY Occasions about his detractors, "for individuals individuals who think you are getting my goat." That demon-may-care attitude is area of the reason Ratner has gathered a Rolodex of famous buddies varying from Russell Simmons and Eddie Murphy to John Grazer and Roman Polanski. Well, might his total honesty. Like this amount of time in 1994 when he told Grazer and director Ron Howard what he considered their new comedy-drama, 'The Paper.' Starring Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall and Randy Quaid (before he went bananas), 'The Paper' is definitely an underrated jewel detailing 24 hrs within the existence of the newspaper editor (Keaton) in a NY Publish-like tabloid. Despite a cult-ant status along with a great lead performance from Keaton, the film never did achieve wide audiences upon release in March of 1994. Not too Ratner was surprised. Having seen a screening with Grazer, Howard and Simmons, the then-24-year-old Ratner offered this little bit of direct critique: "He just stated: 'Well, who's likely to view it? It's type of highbrow,'" Grazer remembered to Itzkoff. "It had never really happened to us. He'd a simple but accurate undertake it." 'The Paper' gained just a little over $38 million throughout its theatrical run the Ratner-directed 'Tower Heist' should earn a great deal in addition to that (possibly even on opening weekend). Return to Moviefone for additional around the film in a few days, and mind to the Occasions to see the entire profile of Ratner. Asuncion
Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Bartha star in Asuncion.
A Rattlestick Playwrights Theater presentation, by special arrangement with the Cherry Lane Theater, of a play in two acts by Jesse Eisenberg. Directed by Kip Fagan.Vinny - Justin Bartha
Edgar - Jesse Eisenberg
Stuart - Remy Auberjonois
Asuncion - Camille ManaJesse Eisenberg has written himself a juicy acting role in "Asuncion" as an idealistic social reformer whose intellectual pretensions make him the exact opposite of Mark Zuckerberg, the scary-cool Facebook founder Eisenberg played in "The Social Network." Scribe throws this young jerk a neat theatrical curve when he introduces him and his smug roommate to a Filipina who challenges their patronizing assumptions about class and ethnic identity. But Eisenberg puts no further demands on his characters, leaving them frozen in a sitcom plot that goes nowhere. Helmer Kip Fagan is comfortable with the louche vibe of downtown theater, and that easy confidence shows itself in this production for Rattlestick. Although play is set in an upstate college town, John McDermott's slovenly student apartment and Jessica Pabst's casual-chic rags would fit right into the NYU-nation in the East Village. Eisenberg might not have a clue about plotting, but he has a facile comic skill for drawing eccentric characters and putting them in unhealthy relationships. He just doesn't know where to go next. Roommates Edgar (Eisenberg) and Vinny (Justin Bartha of "Hangover" fame) have one of those lethal associations. Vinny is an advanced graduate student in Black Studies who grossly over-identifies with his academic thesis. Edgar is a self-anointed reformer who romanticizes poverty and blindly takes up social causes he knows nothing about. Bartha is plenty funny giving Vinny up to Pan African blues ecstasy while stoned. ("You got some African shit right here!") Eisenberg has a terrific moment when Edgar apologizes for the gang kids who beat him bloody and stole his wallet. ("They're oppressed by everything.") Both thesps easily find the comfort zone where their insecure characters draw strength from their sadomasochistic friendship. The amusing if creepy relationship between these mutually needy roommates is thrown off-balance when Edgar's big brother, Stuart (Remy Auberjonois, as overbearing as big brothers are wont to be), drops off his beautiful Filipina bride, Asuncion (a blithe spirit in Camille Mana's animated perf), and takes off on some undisclosed errand. Asuncion is flakier than phyllo dough, which leaves Vinny and Edgar free to make of her what they will. Getting into her groove, Vinny just wants to have fun with her, while Edgar, who has been led to believe she's a mail-order bride, projects all his dimwitted social views on her. But nothing dramatic comes of this awkward threesome. Because Asuncion is such an airhead, she becomes the play's fatal flaw, too vacuous to function as a proper catalyst and too shallow to hold the stage on her own. And that leaves Edgar and Vinny stuck in their caricatured roles, making funny talk but saying nothing of consequence.Set, John McDermott; costumes, Jessica Pabst; lighting, Ben Stanton; sound, Bart Fasbender; production stage manager, Melissa Mae Gregus. Dwts Episode Recap: Monday, March. 24, 2011
Dwts hits the fantastic White-colored Way! The most effective 7 couples perform programs to Broadway's finest hits. Plus: We have our first group dance of the year and Kristin Chenoweth's in your home!Hi, males! Carson's still around! To exchange together with his cruel elimination 7 days before Broadway Week, he increased being "creative director" in the group dance. "People who can't dance train," according to him. And grope Maks, right? However, the individual programs:Make the most of Kardashian and Cheryl Burke: cha-chaThey have Jersey Boys. The moves are tough on his body and also the brain. That shouldn't be hard, right? Kris Jenner stops by rehearsals for just about any cameo to commend her brave boy and order him to kick some ass. I have to admit Make the most of looks quite snazzy within the twinkling red-colored-colored vest. They waste a few bars hamming up just before getting into it. It's a safe routine and Make the most of does a great job. He's good posture and clean lines, but it's all kind of monotonous also called the choice from the cha-cha. His family loves it, even Kim, who means once! Len states it absolutely was precise, but states he'd no rhythm. Bruno thinks it did not have impact. Barbara Ann thinks he shown more charisma and he's round the cusp to become a guy. "You are similar to a late-college bloomer," she states. "I graduated," Make the most of replies. We must start a consuming game with how often he mentions prone to USC.Score: 22Nancy Sophistication and Tristan MacManus: foxtrotThey have Spamalot and Tristan is fitted like a dark evening and seems positively dishy. Tristan! Be my royal prince! They bicker about doing harder choreography. I really love how their fights range from cringe-worthy to entertaining and merely slightly cringe-worthy. The choreography is not that harder, but Nancy gets her way from it. Will it be? She really seems like she's getting fun! Technique-wise, Nancy should be lighter on her behalf account foot and possess better posture, nevertheless the routine can be a cheeky delight. Bruno states it absolutely was a pleasant job. Barbara Ann calls it a showstopper. Len can't hide his smile, but wishes lots of dance reaches hold.Score: 24David Arquette and Kym Manley: quickstepThey're dancing to Grease. David loves Broadway, so he's very happy to do jazz hands, which are "giving existence that extra pah." Oh, David. You're as innocent as Coco. It's adorable. Also adorable: this performance. It's exuberant, peppy and charming, and David's frame is solid. Sadly, it comes down lower apart somewhat when they're from hold and so they escape sync. I am unable to determine if the routine is just too fast for David or he can't harness his energy to stay under control. Still, it's a very respectable outing. Barbara Ann states he completely were living around their anticipation, but states they were from sync. Len states it absolutely was rough around the edges, nevertheless it was full-on. Bruno calls him a frisky teen on springbreak.Score: 23Ricki Lake and Derek Hough: quickstepThey have Males and Dolls. The show's adoration for Derek (and also the nude porn 'stache) aside, Ricki does ought to be there, just based on this routine. It's dynamic, lightning fast and she's killing all the steps without losing a measure. Len states she shown her talent and nitpicks on something small. Bruno states there's impeccable style with outstanding choreography. Barbara Ann calls it poetry moving. Score: 29Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer: tangoThey hold the Phantom in the Opera. Cher loves the play, so Chaz is excited inside the most subdued way possible. The choreography? Less. "At this time around in the sport, I am unable to make things super fundamental," Lacey reprimands him. "You cannot rely on me to help you cope with this any more. ... You have to up the sport.Inch And... he doesn't. There's a bit more content, but this really is kind of a remedial dance. It's not quick enough, dull, and Chaz's form is awful. It is not to the level where Lacey's dragging him, but knowing by his profuse sweating and breathing after, you have to question how close he wound up being to fainting. Bruno states it absolutely was like watching a penguin trying to become menacing. Barbara Ann confirms with Bruno, but states the show is about everyone's journey and thinks it had been most likely probably the most aggressive Chaz remains. She echoes Lacey's speech about getting harder choreography. Len commends him for doing the routine, but states the dance didn't suit his personality. Will we put a moratorium on giving Chaz a pat round the to get using a dance? You don't applaud everyone else for carrying this out, and i'm sure he doesn't would really like your pity either. "Everybody else may have lost belief inside you as an amazing dancer, however i am the only real individual who hasn't,Inch Maks notifies her. OK, Hope isn't totally sexy here, but she handles the vulnerability area of the character well and seems a little more loose and less nervous. That being mentioned, girlfriend remains awkwardly clodhopping around, there's zero stylish action, which extra-large scarf does her no favors. In my opinion my grandmother knitted that in 1994. Barbara Ann states she allowed herself being sexy the first time, but thinks she forces the moves a lot of. Len is baffled. "You will possibly not believe this, Hope, however i haven't lost belief inside you,In . according to him. After which it buries charge: "This really is really the worst dance of yours the whole season." Whoa. That was way harsh, Tai. He lays into Maks, who, naturally fires back about all the stars busting their butts and safeguarding his partner. They bitterly talk over each other that feels as if 10 mins before Tom the Mediator intervenes. Awkward! Bruno states she was doing heel leads as well as the whole factor didn't gel. "I'm frustrated with a few being judged on heel leads and several being judged on effort," Maks notifies Brooke later. Preach it.Score: 20J.R. Uh, In my opinion we now have known since, like, Week 2 he is not a fluke. J.R., meanwhile, doesn't want Ricki or any other people near his top perfect the best option board. J.R. creates top Billy Flynn since Richard Gere. He's uber-dapper and never remarkably is breezing through this. The job is impeccable, the chemistry is sizzling which he even tosses in the cartwheel. Really the only trouble with that is that i'm reminded of Bristol's abominable rendition of "Cell Block Tango." OK, focus. That was yesteryear. Len states he's relentless and states he even compares to Helio's quickstep. Bruno calls it popular. Kevin Maher choreographs a medley to "Large Spender" from Sweet Charitable organization and "Money Money" from Cabaret. Carson's duties as creative director include improving the women funnel their inner prostitute and implementing Maks when he excursions. Did we expect any less? The total amount can be a clever ode to Broadway. The crowd section was great in addition to their individual parts were clearly specific to their own personal abilities, that's basically an additional way to make certain Chaz is a lot from his league. I really deeply love how very carefully Nancy is fitted in contrast for the other ladies, however she goes and does a switch in Tristan's arms. Jealous! Len thinks it absolutely was a suitable tribute. Bruno loves it. Barbara Ann gives Nancy bonuses on her behalf "special move." I'm just going to step away from that particular. So J.R. and Ricki top the evening getting a 29. Chaz is 10 points behind with 19.Whoever else consider Broadway Week? AMC Networks CEO Roasted With Jokes About AMC, Netflix, Occupy Wall Street, Casey Anthony
NY - Jokes referencing AMC's hit shows, such as The Walking Dead, content companies' recent slew of licensing deals with Netflix, the Occupy Wall Street movement and even Casey Anthony entertained an industry crowd here Monday at the annual Center for Communication luncheon, which this year honored AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan. Sapan-led AMC Networks, which includes such cable networks as AMC, IFC and Sundance Channel and used to be part of Dolan family-controlled cable operator Cablevision Systems, recently became a company with a separate stock listing. Roasters at the event at the Pierre Hotel in midtown Manhattan were Joan Rivers, who stars in Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best? on AMC Networks' WE tv, Fred Armisen, star of IFC's Portlandia and SNL cast member, as well as AMC Networks COO Ed Carroll. Rivers said that she took a red-eye into NY, saying about two loud kids on the plane behind her: "Where is Casey Anthony when you need her?" Rivers said she was glad to come when she heard that this was advertised as a special event. "But then it turned out to be a fucking lunch," she said. "But then I realized it's cable, which explains the cash bar." IFC Entertainment has bought a documentary from her, the comedienne also mentioned - Joan Rivers - A Piece of Work, but she quipped she is still waiting to get paid. "I haven't seen one penny," she said to Sapan. "That's why you sent me so far to discuss this." She also quipped that she could use the money, saying: "This is last year's shoes." She also quipped about the growth of his company's cable networks. "What you have done with Sundance - you have taken those wonderful independent films that nobody went to see in theaters," Rivers said to much laughter. "You are now giving us the opportunity to not see them on television." She added: "At AMC, with Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Walking Dead, The Killing - four great hours, four amazing hours. If you just figure out what to do with the other 164, it will be a hit station." After sharing that her table had gotten news of great ratings for the Walking Dead second season premiere Sunday night, she also pitched some of her own show ideas to Sapan. One idea featured Jersey Shore star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi on a fishing boat in a show Rivers dubbed Deadliest Snatch. She also suggested a The Price is Right remake with Winona Ryder. Plus, she suggested "a show that takes the Kardashians, the Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber together on a desert island, and they have to fight until only one is left." Added Rivers: "And the show is called simply: Who Gives A Fuck?" Earlier, Carroll quipped that Sapan had decided not to come to the event earlier in the day, because of the presence of "too many old media types." He asked attendees if they had anyone from Netflix or Hulu at their table. "If you are a programmer, why would you bother!?" he joked. After the recent spin-off of AMC Networks, Sapan is CEO of a public company now. Carroll joked that this puts Sapan in an awkward position since he spent most of last week protesting down on Wall Street. Sharing with the audience some comments that he thought Sapan may make, Carroll joked that he removed classic movies from AMC and added advertising after removing culture from Bravo and adding ads there as well. Carroll also quipped that the lunch was gluten-free in Sapan's honor. Armisen joked that some shows on AMC Networks channels remind him of how Steve Jobs invented gadgets before he ever thought he would need them. He thanked Sapan for the "big thinking to put these shows on." The luncheon also featured an Onion News Network video tribute with former CBS News head Andrew Heyward, AMC Networks and Cablevision Systems chairman Charles Dolan, Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge, AMC president Charlie Collier and IFC and Sundance Channel boss Evan Shapiro. Sapan thanked all attendees, including Rivers for providing WE tv with a cornerstone show and Armisen for IFC hit Portlandia and "bringing us to a new level" in the process. Sapan also thanked the Dolan family and other top executives at Cablevision have enocuraged his team to take programming gambles on shows. "I'm sure they'll join me in being very proud of the glorification of drinking, smoking, infidelity, lying and, just generally, aweful human behavior that is Mad Men." He added that they also "supported the uplifting tale of a teacher who used his skills to operate a crystal meth lab in Breaking Bad." Concluded Sapan: "So, clearly, we have their support - or their inattention." Sapan ended by thanking his company's employees "who in the best way join me in confusing on a daily basis hard work with pointless shenanigans such as this." Among the industry power players in the crowd were Discovery Communications president and CEO David Zaslav, Weinstein Co. co-founder Harvey Weinstein, former NBC Universal boss Bob Wright and NY City film and TV commissioner Katherine Oliver, among others. The event co-chairs included HBO's Richard Plepler, Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman, former News Corp. top executive Peter Chernin, Sony Corp. boss Sir Howard Stringer, CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves and other big names. Center for Communication executive director Catherine Williams pointed out that Sapan is also the first published poet and author to be honored at the luncheon." One of the most accomplished leaders and innovators in the media and entertainment industry, Josh Sapan has overseen [the company's] growth and success for the past 24 years," the Center said when it recently announced this year's honoree for its Frank Stanton Award. "AMC Networks airs some of the most critically acclaimed series on television including AMC's Mad Men and Breaking Bad, Sundance Channel's Carlos and IFC's The Onion News Network. Last year, Jeff Zucker was honored at the event after he had been informed by in-coming owner Comcast that he would have to leave his post as NBCUniversal CEO. Zucker at the event joked that the Center has a knack for bestowing an award on executives "right after they get shit-canned." After all, several years earlier, Tom Freston was the toast of the Center - after just having been pushed out from his role as Viacom CEO. Previous award honorees also include Charlie Rose, BET chairman Debra Lee, Johnny Carson and Michael Bloomberg. Related Topics AMC Joshua Sapan The Walking Dead Cablevision

Jason Schwartzman and Jesse Dylan Promote L.A. Museums in Short Film (First Look)
The Hollywood Reporter has exclusive footage of a new comedic short film starring actor Jason Schwartzman.our editor recommendsLACMA to Honor Clint Eastwood and John Baldessari Helmed by director Jesse Dylan (Kicking & Screaming, American Wedding), the almost-five-minute PSA, shot at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, promotes the sprawling new arts initiative Pacific Standard Time. The museum extravaganza, beginning in October, will see 60-plus exhibits open in 2011 and 2011. The Getty Trust-funded program showcases the work of Southern California artists and designers between 1945 and 1980, giving context to how L.A. has become the major art capital it is today. In the spot, titled Pacific Standard Time: Jason Schwartzman Celebrates John Baldessari, the Bored to Death star is followed by a huge image of white-bearded conceptual artist John Baldessari, who talks to him from walls. The artist appears after Schwartzman is heard saying to a friend: "Wanna go check out the museum? Are you kidding me? Have a good night. I don't like art?" Baldessari -- known for his works which question the very nature of viewing art and for his signature works, among others, showing blue dots covering faces -- engages in a playful dialogue with the actor about museum-going. "Metaphorically,if you give some kids some gorgonzola cheese, you know, they are going to spit it out. But if you give them some Velveeta they say 'Um yummy' and then maybe when they are young adults they are really gonna savor gorgonzola cheese and arts like that," says Baldessari. To which Schwartzman responds: "Stop following me." Eventually the artist gently convinces Schwartzman to check out the museum. "I think the best thing is not to be intimidated and if you don't like something you just say you don't like it. That's fine," says the artist. The PSA is an innovative approach from TBWA\CHIA\DAY, which also recently released another spot pairing musician Anthony Kiedis with painter Ed Ruscha, who along with Baldessari, also has works spotlighted in Pacific Standard Time shows. The ad agency felt strongly that an on-the-nose, earnest tone was not what it wanted. The idea was to link influential artists with today's creative forces. A print ad is also being released featuring Ice Cube and the late furniture designers Charles and Ray Eames. "The traditional way museums and shows market themselves tends to be to showcase a signature piece of artwork with the name and the date from and to and pole banners or posters. It's a convention. What we wanted to do was turn that upside down. We wanted to make the short film accessible and also make your curious in a light-hearted way," says Patrick O'Neill, executive creative director of TBWA\CHIAT\DAY Los Angeles. Schwartman was especially thrilled to meet Baldessari. "I am a fan of Mr. Baldessari's work and I couldn't believe I actually got to go to his studio and talk to him," says the actor. "I talked to John for almost an hour and a half. Look at how I went from Mr. Baldessari to John so quickly in this conversation. I've never met a famous artist before." Director Dylan, who also is the CEO and creative director of media-production company Wondros, and Schwartzman had met years ago. Dylan, who calls Schwartzman his "dream guy," called up the actor out of the blue. "Jason's acting style has an intelligence and curiosity about things that you relate to and that was John Baldessari's approach back in the day. It's a charming and unexpected pairing," says Dylan, who says the idea of projecting Baldessari's face on the sides of buildings "came from a fragment of a dream." "I actually go to museums with my kids at least once every three weeks. We need to appreciate artists even more. They are a precious commodity of Los Angeles," adds Dylan.
